What is causing black mould on the leaves of my Bougainvillea?

Our Advice:

This is could be aphids or (more likely) mealy bugs or scale insects feeding and excreting sweet honeydew onto the leaves, where the sooty mould grows on it. Control these pests with Bug Clear Ultra from Scott's or Resolva Bug Killer from Westland. Once they have gone, the sooty mould should gradually disappear.

Here is some more information for you:

Bougainvillea: Overview

Bougainvillea is a genus of flowering plants native to South America, but now widely cultivated in many tropical and subtropical regions around the world. It is known for its vibrant and colourful bracts, which surround small, inconspicuous flowers.

Bougainvillea: Characteristics

Bougainvillea is a woody, climbing or sprawling vine that can reach up to 30 feet in height. It has small, green leaves and produces brightly coloured bracts that can range in colour from pink, red, purple, orange, and white. The plant is also thorny, with sharp, woody spines that can cause injury if not handled carefully.

Bougainvillea: Cultivation

Bougainvillea is a popular plant for tropical and subtropical climates, but it can also be grown in containers in cooler regions. It prefers well-draining soil and full sun exposure. Bougainvillea is drought tolerant and does not require frequent watering, but it should be watered deeply when necessary. Pruning should be done in the early spring to promote new growth and maintain the shape of the plant.

Bougainvillea: Uses

Bougainvillea is commonly used as an ornamental plant in gardens, parks, and public spaces. It is also used as a hedge, a vine for trellises and fences, and a ground cover. Bougainvillea is also popular for bonsai, and its flowers are used in floral arrangements and for decoration.

Bougainvillea is a beautiful and versatile plant that can add vibrant colours to any landscape. With proper care and cultivation, it can thrive in a variety of growing conditions and provide years of enjoyment for gardeners and plant enthusiasts.
