The best time to prune a Lilac is just after it has finished flowering. Cut off the dead flower spikes and about 30 cm of the stem to stop it getting too straggly and encourage branching. Remove any dead, damaged or diseased stems and feed it with a general fertiliser such as Vitax Q4 or pelleted chicken manure.
