New fragrant orchids

There's good news for orchid fans this spring with the introduction of three new delicately-scented moth orchids (Phalaenopsis).

Until now, this top-selling type of orchid as an indoor plant, Phalaenopsis (pronounced Fal-en-op-sis) has been known for beautiful, large flowers in white or shades of yellow and pink (unless it had been dyed) but it had no fragrance. Millions are sold in the UK every year and they are available in High Street shops as well as garden centres. Their chief attribute is an ability to flower throughout the year as long as they are positioned in a well-lit position away from direct sun and watered and fed regularly.

Now, British orchid producers Double H Nurseries of New Milton Hampshire, have introduced varieties ‘Diffusion' (rich pink/purple flowers), ‘New Life' (white petals tinted pink and yellow) and ‘Sunny Smell' (yellow flowers tinted dark pink) which combine attractive flowers with a scent that is strongest in the morning, but continues all day.

These orchids will be available from Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Tesco this year and Double H is also teaming up with floral designer Jonathan Moseley to showcase British-grown orchids at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show (6-10 June), where over 100 varieties will form one of the largest displays of its kind ever staged.
