Trade winners

Held over two days each September in Cheshire, the Four Oaks trade show is one of the largest in the country and is always well attended. Here you can see new plants alongside new products, machinery, growing equipment, lights and Christmas trees – basically all the things that keep the whole horticultural industry ticking over. This year, the sheer amount of colour took your breath away. Whether it was pots or plants, it seemed that colour is IN. In the competition for Best Bedding Plant Introduction, the winner was Verbena Temari Candystripe from Channel Island Plants UK. The judges gave a High Commendation for Patio Gerbera Volcanoes from Florist of Holland and Basket Begonia Fontana from Eagle Plants. The Best Nursery Stock Introduction award went to columnar apple Blue Moon, introduced by New Place Nurseries. There were High Commendations for Escallonia Golden Carpet (Seiont Nurseries), Agapanthus Sweet Surprise (Fairweather’s) and Heuchera Black Taffet (Eagle Plants). One of the prettiest flowers we saw was a Gentian called Rocky Diamond although, sadly, they are not the easiest plants to grow unless you have a steeply sloping, well-drained garden. Among the most stunning large plants on show were a collection of Japanese maples from New Zealand.
