Spud Champions 2014

Hilltop Junior School in Wickford, Essex (pictured) have won two top awards in the Grow Your Own Potato Competition 2014 for schools. They won the Potato Council sposored Marmax Junior Picnic Bench, that has eight fixed seats, with the heaviest yield, namely 4553 grams of Potato Rocket. They also won our £350 Suttons Seeds Voucher for growing the Heaviest Single Tuber weighing in at 602 grams. They were competing with some 16,000 schools nationwide and put the success down to giving potatoes a flying start in their greenhouse made from recycled clear plastic water bottles. Marland Hill Community Primary School, Rochdale, Lancs. (above) won our other £350 Suttons Voucher for the greatest number of tubers harvested, they gathered 167 lovely new potatoes from the 40 litre bag pot. Schools can register now for 2015 on www.gyop.potato.org.uk and get free potato tubers to plant, the pots to grow them in and full classroom instructions. You can also find there the names of all the schools who won regional prizes.
