Gardening New Year

Schools should keep an eye on the Royal Horticultural Society web site for details of their Young Gardener of the Year 2015 Competition about to be announced. They are also sending 2 kg of Salad Leaf Rocket seeds up into outer space which on its return will be sent to schools to grow. Conditions outdoors may be cold, wet, frozen and miserable, but we need to get gardening clubs underway. Be sure you have registered for the free seed potatoes, the pots to grow them in and classroom notes on www.gyop.Potato.org.uk This year there are additional regional competitions and therefore more chances to win prizes. We will be again offering two £350 Suttons Vouchers for the heaviest single tuber grown and the greatest number of tubers harvested from a pot of one of your two kinds. There are still a few packs available and registration closes on Friday 30th January 2015. Seed tubers will be dispatched the first two weeks of February 2015 ready to get chitting on 24th February 2015. Registration also closes at the end of January for the Miracle Gro\'wers Growing Challenge for Schools. This will include the raising of multi-coloured carrots including Purple Sun (The Prince of Wales prefers the taste of purple carrots and they contain high levels of healthy antioxidants), Atomic Red, Cosmic Purple, Purple Haze and Yellowstone. Register on www.lovethegarden.com/schools.
