What is causing the small mounds of dry soil on my lawn?

Our Advice:

This sounds like the activity of a mining bee. These are solitary bees which make nests in the ground to raise their young. They are not aggressive and do not swarm like honey bees, and they are safe around children and pets. These bees are very important and very efficient pollinators. You are lucky to have them in your garden.
