The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced the winner of its very first RHS Chelsea Sustainable Garden Product of the Year Award, championing sustainability in the horticultural industry as the RHS Virtual Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G, opens today (17 - 21 May).
Ocean Plastic Pots was crowned the winner by a team of experts including entrepreneur and Dragons’ Den investor Deborah Meaden. After judging ten shortlisted products*, the panel chose the pots, which are made from discarded rope and fishing net the winner and praised them for raising awareness of the devastating ocean plastic pollution problem whilst providing a more sustainable pot solution for the UK’s gardeners.
Chairman of the judging panel and sustainability expert Chris Harrop OBE said: “This is a business with heart, Ally the creator really cares about the environment, the raw materials are recovered from ports around Britain and Europe and the products are manufactured in Britain. Everyone who buys one of his plant pots has a powerful daily reminder of the need to recycle and in particular look after our oceans.”
Designed in Glasgow and made in Scotland, Ocean Plastic Pots are long lasting, durable plant pots and are the first to use polypropylene from recycled rope and fishing net.
This year the refreshed competition placed prominence on products’ sustainability to highlight the increasing awareness of gardeners and their preference to use more environmentally friendly products and practices in their gardens.
Chris added: “For 2021 the new product of the year award has evolved to focus on the pressing needs of today; climate change, recycling, responsible consumption and how we can use innovation to create sustainable products. The judges were impressed by each and every one of the entries and were unanimous in judging Ocean Plastic Pots to be RHS Chelsea Sustainable Garden Product of the Year 2021.”
All the product finalists will be on display at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which this year will take place in the autumn for the first time from 21 – 26 September.
