Run by Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole (BCP) Council, the staff at the Kings Park Plant Nursery shared on social media the somber news that the nursery would not resume its usual operations in the upcoming spring.
The decision, described as challenging by the BCP, was driven by the impact of soaring inflation, which has significantly escalated costs. Many councils, including BCP, are grappling with heightened demand for essential services such as social care, education, and highways. In light of these financial challenges, the BCP Council has reluctantly opted to close the nursery, anticipating a saving of £85,000 in the 2024/25 financial year.
Having been a dedicated supplier of plants to Bournemouth's local parks and gardens since 1924, the nursery, which employed five permanent staff members, holds a rich history in the community.
Expressing the weight of the decision, the nursery staff conveyed, "It is with a heavy heart that we announce that the difficult decision has been made to close our plant nursery. We will not open in spring 2024. We are hugely grateful to all of you, our loyal customers, for your valued support through the years."
Despite the closure, the staff shared a poignant message, saying, "We will miss serving you but may your outdoor space – however big or small – continue to bring you joy as you love and nurture it."
Before the final closure, the nursery plans to reopen for four days in February (14-17th) to sell any remaining stock.
