Home > Question >

What are the hard swollen lumps on my azalea plants?

Our Advice:

This is Azalea gall fungus. Pick off the swollen growths and burn them, as these contain the fungal spores that spread the infection to nearby plants. Spray the plants with Fruit and Vegetable Disease Control from Bayer. Several applications may be needed.

Azaleas: Overview

Azaleas are a genus of flowering shrubs that are native to Asia, Europe, and North America. They are known for their colourful and often fragrant flowers, which bloom in spring and summer. Azaleas are popular ornamental plants and are widely cultivated for their beauty and ease of care.

Azaleas: Characteristics

Azaleas have glossy, green leaves that are usually 1-2 inches long and oval-shaped. The shrubs produce flowers in a wide range of colours, including white, pink, red, purple, and orange. The flowers are often large and showy, with a distinctive funnel or bell shape. Azaleas can range in size from 1 to 20 feet tall and wide, depending on the species and growing conditions.

Azaleas: Cultivation

Azaleas are relatively easy to grow and care for, making them a popular choice for gardens and landscapes. They prefer well-drained, acidic soil and partial shade, although some species can tolerate full sun or more shade than others. Azaleas also prefer moist soil and benefit from regular watering during dry periods. Pruning is usually done after flowering to maintain shape and size.

Azaleas: Uses

Azaleas are often used in landscaping as hedges, screens, or as a specimen plant. Their colourful and fragrant flowers make them an attractive addition to any garden. They are also used in erosion control, as their extensive root system can help stabilize soil on steep slopes. In addition to their ornamental uses, some species of azalea have medicinal properties and are used in traditional medicine in Asia.

Azaleas are a versatile and attractive addition to any garden or landscape. With their colourful and often fragrant flowers, ease of care, and ability to tolerate a wide range of growing conditions, they are a popular choice for both ornamental and functional purposes.
