Tree-mendous

British historic parks and gardens are expected to benefit from the £1.57bn Government arts bail-out, with grants and loans towards construction projects, but in Gloucestershire, the local BBC Radio station are helping people take more direct action to improve their parks and green spaces. The benefit of such areas was brought home over the lockdown, when there was a massive increase in visitors anxious for a walk in the fresh air. In some areas, this was as high as 700% above the normal visitor numbers.

With as many as 80% of our ash trees - the third most common British tree - expected to be lost to die-back disease, replacing our woodland areas will become critical. Ash trees alone can provide a habitat for over 1000 wildlife species.

A project called Ourboretum, led by BBC Radio Gloucestershire, aims to get local people growing 2,020 trees from seed and anyone can join in. While the seedlings grow, experts will decide where they will be given a permanent home. Rather than ash, trees like oak, beech and hazel will be used to help replace some of the lost trees. New ash trees can be introduced once the threat has diminished.

Award-winning horticulturist and landscape designer, Chris Beardshaw is acting as Ambassdor for the project and called it a “fabulous idea” to get community groups, schools and workplaces collecting and growing seeds this autumn to grow at home and create a new generation of trees in the local area.
