Ed-ing for the Finish Line

Ed Horne, Head of Communications at the RHS is dusting off his running shoes to take part in this Sunday's London Marathon to raise money for children's gardening.

We all know that children get so much out of gardening and growing plants. Not only does it teach them where their food comes from but they learn important life lessons, develop numeracy and literacy skills, grow their confidence and so much more.

Being around nature and physically engaging with it is a crucial part in any child’s development and this can all be achieved in the garden and for many the only regular access they get to a garden, is at school.

And that is why the RHS Campaign for School Gardening is so important – it’s helping thousands of school children all over the UK get active in the garden.

Ed Horne, the RHS’s Head of Communications, is so passionate about the cause he’s going to be running the London Marathon 2021 (26.2 miles!) this weekend to raise money for it.

Ed says: “Ten years ago I visited a school in South London where we’d help create a garden on a neglected patch of land using raised beds from an M&G show garden from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

“The kids were so proud of what they’d grown and excitedly showed me little green shoots where they’d planted seeds. They were amazed at having created life in a patch of soil and one little boy said he felt like a magician.

“This was surely far better for them than being sat in front of a screen and since then I have championed gardening at schools wherever I can.

“I really hope I can raise money for this amazing cause and am so grateful to everyone who has donated already – thank you.”
