The skins on the fruits have toughened during a spell of dry weather. When it rains, the fruits start to swell, but the skins can't stretch so they split open. The fruits are still edible but need to be picked before they go mouldy. Mulch the tree well in spring and, in dry weather, apply at least 25 litres of water a week to each tree.
