Why do the skins on my tomatoes keep splitting?

Our Advice:

Tomatoes need lots of water, but they need it regularly. If the roots are dry for a few days, the skins dry, harden and lose their elasticity. When the plant is given more water the fruits swell, but the skin can't stretch, so it splits open. This exposes the flesh inside which often becomes infected by fungal spores that will ruin the fruit.
